sales of new homes in september shot up nearly 6% to a 2 1/2 year high. prices on the homes were higher as well. also the u.s. economy grew at a slightly faster pace of 2%, up from 1.3% in the spring months. the gross domestic product got help from consumers and spending by the federal government. a lot of news in the tech world. apple unveiled the ipad mini along with other devices and microsoft released the windows 8 microso microsystem and the tablet. fedex is forecasting a record number of shipments this holiday season, 13 more than last year, thanks to more online spending. they plan to hire more seasonal workers in november and

off to a chilly start with 40s and 50s and hang on, we have sunshine creeping up and starting to warm and we are going to warm quickly in the valleys and places like napa and livermore, into the 80s later on. it will turn out to be nice. 56 in san francisco. good morning to the city by the bay. we are looking at clear skies and fog offshore because we have high pressure in control. the next storm system is developing off the coast of alaska. you can see the upper level spin there and this is about 1,000 miles offshore, but it is the next system and it will arrive in time for halloween. on the other side of the united states, you have hurricane sandy bringing wind, rain, and even torrential downpours starting to arrive up towards cape hatteras and down towards the coast towards savannah, georgia. the unusual thing about this system, this is going to be a category one hurricane by the

time it makes landfall tuesday night into wednesday morning near new york city. unusual. here you go sunday morning, you will notice the bands starting to bull into washington, d.c. by the time we get into monday, new york city will be looking at heavy rain and the potential for flooding with storm surge from boston to d.c. up to three to five feet. that's the surge with the water moving inland. the other impressive thing is the heavy rain. they are expecting about seven to 13 inches of rain. not only for new england, but that includes the mid-atlantic. we are talking cape hatteras, norfolk, washington, d.c. this is before it makes landfall. this is 4:00 on tuesday. all of the yellows and reds. once we see this thing make landfall into tuesday and wednesday and you can expect more to mile up. we are talking about mountain

treating. you can't drop her off at a birthday party because you need to monitor her blood sugar. how old are the kids before they can kind of take it on their own. what kind of challenges does it present for having a normal social life? >> we try to let the children have a normal life as much as possible, but at times we want to take the burden off. she manages her diabetes at school, but when she is out having fun, i will tag along to be the to manage it and think about it so all she has to think about is her social life. >> i met your daughter and don't think she minds at all. november is national diabetes awareness month and for those of us who don't have diabetes, what is it you want us to know other than it requires monitoring? >> there is a lot of focus about

type ii diabetes. there is type one too and that's that is an autoimmune disease. there is no cause and no cure for as of now. our children didn't do anything to bring it out. it's not because they ate sugar as babies. their bodies went hay wire and attacked their pancreas and it stopped producing insulin. it's important for people to realize there two types. type one is uncurable and they don't know the cause. once people get it, they don't out grow it. they have it for the rest of their life and it's hard to manage. >> definitely having support of family and friends helps. you have a number of events that your group organized. tomorrow is the pumpkin carving on november 4th, there is a candy exchange which is cool to see. i want my own kids to go. that's in pleasanton. you will be showing a film about living with diabetes and

including new york. sandy will merge with two other systems becoming a kind of super storm. sandy is set to strike before election day, power outages could mean serious problems. >>. >> following up to a tragedy in new york this morning that sent a chill down every parent's spine from new york to here in the bay area. a nanny entrusted to care for children stabs them to death and tries to kill herself. this happened in new york, but a year ago the family lived here in san francisco's noe valley. they are stun and pained by the tragedy. >> a memorial for two children. their nanny stabbed them to death and then tried to kill herself when their mother arrived home. ortega is alive and the parents

are now cling to their 2-year-old while they deal with the death of the other two. moms in san francisco's noe valley are stunned. kevin and marina sold their home just over a year ago. kevin was a yahoo executive and took a job with cnbc in new york. the company issued the statement saying there simply no words to convey the magnitude of this tragedy. what we can do is come to express an unwavering support for a friend in need. marina's blog reveal what is looks like a loving relationship between the krims and ortega. the family spend time with the 50-year-old suspect and her family in the dominican republic. working moms said finding child care is one of the biggest challenges of parenting. >> it's the hardest thing i have had to do aside from having the baby and leaving him. >> katie said references and

. >> welcome back here on this saturday at 7:47. we have a marine layer developing and high pressure in control. we are not going to see much fog this morning or tomorrow for that matter. good morning in the bay area whether center. a chilly start in the valleys. 47 right now and santa cruz up the coast. we head up towards the peninsula with 56 degrees and another one of the chilly spots. you get the picture. it's one of the mornings where you need an extra layer. heading through the afternoon, we are seeing more sunshine. the next system is gaining strength out across the coast of alaska. the low pressure is spinning and a cold front is draped along. we head through halloween. tuesday into wednesday, this will approach the coast and by wednesday evening, we are looking at showers likely in the forecast. a repeat of what we saw last

week with a few days of heavy rain not only for wednesday, but eventually into thursday. we will look at the shower activity moving on through and more snow is on the way if you are a skier. you like those slopes. as far as the east coast goes, there is hurricane sandy and it has no been upgraded to a hurricane. it fell below hurricane strength a few hours ago, but the latest shows it is a hurricane once again with winds up to 75 miles per hour. this is expected to stay out across the open water and it will weaken as it moves into colder water, but the computer model has it strengthening back up to a category one before it makes landfall. this is monday morning. by monday afternoon into tuesday, it's still a category and makes landfall. you may have heard early, this thing will merge with a cold front. we are talking about potential for heavy rain and flooding and even for appalachian snow. we will get all of that as we

head through the next few days. if you are doing traveling, we want to give you a heads up and avoid the area. 81 in santa rosa and 71 in san francisco. it will be beautiful across the bay area. today and tomorrow, a few more clouds heading back in. as i told you, get ready for the rain and wednesday in the evening hours. that's when we will see the first few drops. i wish we had a better forecast and we can't give you false information. be prepared. wednesday and thursday, make sure you are ready for the rain. >> at least he said it nicely. thank you. moving on now, the number of fungal meningitis cases linked to the dirty steroid injections reached a record high. 338 patients have been sicken and 25 of those people have died. on tuesday they revoked the license of the new england compounding center.

the black fungus found in the company's vials was that found in sick patients fuel-injected with the steroid. they were mostly used to treat chronic back pain. >> a possible breakthrough in finding a cure for autism. a clinical trial in northern california is umbilical cord stems used to try to reverse the developmental disorder. the first of its kind trial led by the cord blood registry will accept 30 children with autism not connected to a genetic factor. the stem cells were collected from the cord blood bank as they were newborns. they could be able to stimulate neurological repair. >> stem cells may have an impact on regulating the immune or the nervous system. >> results from the trial are expected to take about a year if successful.
